The Payments Processing team is the backbone of our payment ecosystem, connecting Airbnb with payment processors worldwide. We process payments in over 70 currencies across 191 countries, ensuring that transactions are seamless, reliable, and cost-effective.
Your Impact
As a Software Engineer on the Payments Processing team, your mission will be to design and build a world-class payments gateway platform. You’ll focus on creating a system that’s fast, easy to integrate with, and resilient to any external disruptions. Your work will ensure that our financial transactions are accurate, our costs are optimized, and our guests and hosts never have to worry about payment issues.
What You’ll Do
- Quickly learn and adapt to the payments domain.
- Prioritize performance, scalability, and reliability in backend platform development.
- Write and deliver high-quality, production-ready code.
- Focus on system quality, ensuring it performs well under all conditions.
- Make autonomous technical decisions with minimal supervision.
Projects You’ll Work On
- Develop the next generation of our service-oriented architecture gateway platform, making processor integration simple and robust.
- Integrate and migrate payment providers such as PayPal and Bank of America.
- Enhance our smart routing system for flexible, cost-efficient traffic management, with improved anomaly detection and market failover capabilities.
- Collaborate with Design and Product teams to innovate and lead new initiatives, improving orchestrations and payment quality.
Your Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
- 2+ years of industry experience in backend development.
- Strong coding skills, particularly in Java, with a focus on delivering production-ready code.
- Experience with relational databases, caching solutions, API design, RESTful services, message queuing, data streaming, and workflow frameworks.
- Proficiency in distributed systems and service-oriented architecture.
- Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies.
Where You’ll Work
This role is fully remote within the United States, with occasional visits to an Airbnb office or offsite meetings as needed. However, employment is limited to specific states where Airbnb has registered entities. Please check the list of eligible states as it may change.

Compensation and Benefits
This role offers a competitive base salary, with a range of $153,000—$180,000 USD, along with potential bonuses, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits. The exact offer will depend on your skills, experience, and market factors.
